Delicious Homemade Chai Tea Latte Recipe

A Chai Tea Latte is a hot drink made of black tea, spices and milk. Its original Indian name is Masala Chai – “chai” meaning “tea” in Hindi – but was renamed by coffee shop chains. It is soothing and warm for cold winter days like right now, but can also be served cold in the summer. A real treat!

The recipe that works best for me is very simple ; you can adjust it to your own preference on almost any aspect: quantity of spices, type of milk, etc. Here is what you will need to prepare your homemade Chai Tea Latte:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of water
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon (powder)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 pods of cardamom
  • 2 star anis
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
  • 2 teabags of back tea (Assam, Chai or Darjeeling)

Put all your ingredients in a pan on medium heat; bring it to the boil. Lower the heat to a minimum, cover and let it sit from 5 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how much flavour you want in your drink. Sift, and serve!

A few tips:

  • If you like it spicier, you can add 1 teaspoon of peppercorn and/or thinly sliced ginger
  • Any black tea will do but  I personally prefer it with a Chai tea

To make a pretty presentation, you can add some whipped cream with a sprinkle of cinnamon powder on top. If you give this recipe a try, don’t hesitate to send me a picture on Twitter (@izzylifetweets) or Instagram (@anizzylife) with #anizzylife ! 😉

Warm hug to you,
